World Environment day: Yacht with water without waste leaves port

5 June 2018: For Giles & Becky, the crew of SY Spirit of Phantom this day means mainly the start of their busy summer chartering season. They probably didn’t spent a minute thinking about the fact that today is World Environment day, they simply didn’t have time for it, putting all their energy in preparing the boat for departure today from Palma de Mallorca to their chartering destination.

However, Spirit of Phantom made a big step today re caring about the environment. During their winter chartering season in the Caribbean the crew decided not willing to have another season producing so much plastic waste due to their guests, owners and theirselves drinking plastic bottled water on board. Besides the annoying quantity of plastic waste that they left on the sometimes tiny Caribbean islands where recycling is not possible, they considered this habit of drinking plastic bottled water as a waste of time, space, money and energy (provisioning, storing, cooling of the bottles and finally disposal of the plastic waste). While being in the Caribbean they got in touch with Water without waste to follow its Action plan to come to a sustainable drinking water solution before the summer season would start. Requirements, technical details, measurements and options were exchanged via email and shortly after their arrival, equipment (filtration/purification, cooling, carbonizing & multifunctional tap) as well as 100 sustainable reusable branded and personalized bottles were ready to be installed and delivered.

Wishing Spirit of Phantom and its crew, owners and guests enjoyable sailing with tasty, fresh and safe water without waste, may many yachts follow in your wake!

Proud of this beauty of a beast!

Being the 133st superyacht recently completing the survey ‘Turn the tide on plastic, also on superyachts’, this beauty of a beast deserves a position on the Wall of care since it completely banned plastic bottled water. Thanks to environmental conscious crew that used its influence at the capable shipyard during the building process to get equipment installed to be deliberated from buying, storing, cooling and above all from leaving the environment around 8.500 plastic bottles (based on a liter quantity) in a year.

Even by consciously separating garbage, only 10 % of plastic garbage is recyled, the majority of the other 90 % ends up at landfills or gets flushed into rivers and seas and end up as small plastic particles in the oceans harming marine life and entering human bodies.

Since not all yachts have the ‘luxury’ of having a complete concept of drinkwater filtering equipment installed during the building, they have to find solutions afterwards to become more environmental friendly and to reduce the plastic footprint. Water without waste developed a straight forward, but customized Action plan to give recommendations how to deliberate your yacht from plastic bottled water.

#To turn the tide on plastic on yachts, start @ the yard

#Drinking water filtering equipment should be a standard environmental requirement during yachtbuilding

#Be the difference that you want to see in the world

#Small changes make a big difference
